Alvor Beach Villas
Alvor beach
Situated half way along the curved bay of Lagos, Alvor is a classic old fishing village, founded as far back as the Carthaginians and is a haven for the holidaymaker. Narrow cobbled streets slope down to the huge beautiful sandy beach and harbour, all linked by a maze of narrow side streets packed with shops, bars and restaurants. Alvor beach is long enough to cater for all activities from water sports, exploring rocky coves, relaxing on sun beds or in beach bars, or just enjoying the quiet stretches. There are sand dunes along this beach, but no cliffs.

Alvor is continually being modernised with new hotels villa and apartment complexes, but still retains its village charm. The new promenade along the front of the village is a lovely place to sit and while away the time, and you will also find Alvors' tiny fish market here.

For nature lovers and bird watchers, the marshland, saltpans and mudflats of the Alvor estuary are ideal. You will spot many waders here and it is also the breeding ground for Little Terns and Yellow Wagtails.

Historians might like to visit the neolithic burial site at Alcalar, which is approximately 4,500yrs old. Park in the village, and the road to the ground is signposted. At Quinta de Aguazul, mosaic floors, more or less intact, can be seen at Abicada, the site of a Roman villa. In Portimao, the new municipal museum has been developed from an old fish canning factory. This is easier to reach if you park on the riverside in town, and walk along the promenade edged with palms to the small harbour/marina, where you will find the museum behind it.

Alvor was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1755, leaving the attractive 16th century church as the village's oldest surviving building and has a prime example of great craftmanship in its main doorway of the Manueline era.
